It was only minutes past 7 p.m., when the graduates marched side by side through the doors. Family and friends stood and cheered for the arriving students.
The day had come for graduates to accept their diplomas.
On Dec. 11, CFCC held the annual summer and fall commencement ceremony at the First Baptist Church of Ocala.
Dr. Charles Dassance, president of CFCC, began the ceremony by introducing the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, Ira Holmes.
"He is recognized for his leadership in the International Film Series," Dassance said.
Holmes said that he is honored to receive this award. However, it is because of the students that the International Film Series is a success.
"Good teachers, good books, OK…,"Holmes said. "but consistency is what makes the difference. It's a privilege to serve the students, the college and the community."
With over a hundred graduates, students wore the colors of royal blue as they received their degrees and certificates Friday night. After years of hard work and dedication their requirements had been accomplished.
However, for many this is not the end of their education. Many students plan to further their education at universities or other academic facilities.
"I'm taking classes this spring," said Karen Gauvin, CFCC graduate of associate in science in landscape and horticulture technology. "But, I don't plan to take as many classes. I want to relax a little next semester to have a little social life for once."
Students who were graduating with honors wore a red tassel, so that they could be easily recognized for their academic achievements. Family and friends yelled and cheered for the students as their names were called.
Unlike previous years, CFCC students were required to sanitize their hands before walking the stage to receive their certificates. In light of the recent Swine Flu epidemic many schools opted for the use of sanitizers at graduation ceremonies, and some even chose to cut out the handshaking all together.
At the end of the night there were at least a hundred CFCC graduates walking out of the church.
Betty Strifler, chairman of the district board of trustees, said, "I wish you well. You are now a part of the CFCC alumni association."
