Sweatpants and hoodies have become a signature collegiate uniform for far too long. Admittedly, it is much easier to roll out of bed, throw on some sweats and stumble into the classroom. However, many college students (myself included) want to feel comfy without having to show up to class in pajamas.
No matter what your personal style is, it is possible to find a few pieces that are comfortable and cute enough to get you through the semester. Here are a few tips that I have found helpful.
Stick to basics.
A few pair of jeans that fit well can go a long way, especially in sensible colors like black, white and dark or light wash. Stock up on tank tops and fitted tees in basic colors as well as bold, spring time colors that can be layered easily.
Take short cuts.
This season, shorts have become available in every cut, color and fabric. Depending on your style, a pair of shorts in leather, silk, satin or of course, denim can be one of the easiest things to throw on when you do not have time to think about what to wear.
Take one step at a time.
I know this is Florida, but personally, I am not a big fan of flip-flops unless I am at the beach. And unless you are a die-hard fashionista, I would save heels for the weekend. For an easy alternative, slip into some ballet flats or colorful sandals. They are so easy to find this time of year and even easier to wear.
Accessories are a must.
When you want to dress casual and comfortable, the easiest way to stylize an outfit is through accessories. Chunky necklaces, piled on bangles, flashy earrings or statement rings can express fashion sense without having to sacrifice comfort.
Top it all off.
A cute jacket or sweater can easily accent a simple outfit. For spring, three quarter sleeve cardigans work wonders, and denim jackets are always classic. You could even opt for a light-weight blazer to add a little extra pizzazz.
It is no secret that students are usually on a tight budget, so it is best to keep pieces around that are versatile and practical. Mix and match the basics and throw in a few signature pieces to let your personality shine through.
As college students, it is hard keeping it all together, but we can at least make it look like we have got a hold on things. In this case, putting forth just a little effort in an outfit can earn you an A+ in College Couture 101.
