It is late January, on a Saturday evening. The air is cool and crisp. The grass is rough. Where can you find yourself on a night like this?

Anyone 18 or older can find themselves on the soccer field at the Belleview Sports Complex playing in the adult soccer league.

John (L.J.) Sommers, 19, signed up for the adult league on Jan. 16, at the Belleview Sports Complex, located at 6547 SE 107th St.

Sommers, who transferred from the University of North Florida to continue his education at CFCC to become a nurse practitioner, has been playing soccer for 14 years.

"The best part about soccer is the competition," Sommers said. "Plus, it keeps you in shape."

In order to play soccer, Sommers said he has to prioritize by balancing school and his part-time job, though these things do not always come first.

"I schedule work in the morning so I can make it to the games and I do my homework really late at night so I can play soccer," Sommers said.

Kristen Corley, 20, a physical therapy major, also signed up for the adult soccer league.

Corley has been playing soccer for 12 years and joined the league because "it is a lot of fun, competitive and is great exercise."

She describes soccer as her favorite past time and said she tries to play as often as she can.

"Not only is it fun, but it is a great stress reliever," Corley said. "When I am on the field, it's like nothing else matters."

The first games are on Jan. 23, starting at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All games will be held on Saturdays at these times and practices are not mandatory, though teams can get together to practice if they would like.

Although the sign-up day has already passed, participants can register up until the first game. Registration is $50. For more information, send your questions and concerns to Christine Devito at carmadevo@cox.net.
