ASSIGNED READING MUST BE COMPLETED BY DATE IT WILL BE DISCUSSED.

 #Wednesday Jan. 6: Welcome! Introduction of senior staff. Editors speak. Meet with section editors. Review of course syllabus and assignments. Discus staff organization, expectations, deadlines, skills, and work ethics. Open house with lunch after class.

 Friday Jan. 8: Ch. 1: Today's Media (pgs. 1-9) and Ch. 2: Ingredients of News (pgs. 10-25). What is news? Types of reporting and begin story ideas strategy session. Editors meet in Patriot Press office.

 #Monday Jan. 11: Guests: CFCC Marketing & Public Relations staff. Begin preparation for FEBRUARY staff meeting. Story ideas strategy session. Each staff member must bring TWO story ideas (news + features/sports) to FEBRUARY staff meeting.

 **#Wednesday Jan. 13: MANDATORY STAFF MEETING for FEBRUARY issue. Each staff member must bring TWO story ideas (news + features/sports) to staff meeting. Stories assigned for FEBRUARY issue and emailed that night to staff.

 #Friday Jan. 15: Ch. 3: Qualities of Good Writing (pgs. 27-41) and Ch. 10: Interviewing (pgs. 137-153). How to make my writing "come alive." Grammar refresher. I've been assigned the story, now what? Tips for setting up interviews and what to do to prepare for your interview. Practice interview.

 MONDAY JAN. 18: MLK HOLIDAY. NO CLASSES.

 #Wednesday Jan. 20: Review of Student Publications Manual/ Patriot Press Packet *(bring both to class for review with Mr. Marino/editors).

 #Friday Jan. 22: Ch. 6: Organizing a News Story (pgs. 73-87) and Ch. 7: Developing a News Story (pgs. 88-97) How do I write a news story? Inverted Pyramid/ Nut graph and other terms of journalistic writing. Handouts. Sample writing. Editorializing. Returning staff work with new staff.

 #Monday Jan. 25: Ch. 4: Summary Leads (pgs. 42-58) and Ch. 5: Special Leads (pgs. 59-72). Getting my story started the right way: the importance of leads and being able to identify different types of leads. Examples of good leads and other leads. Returning staff work with new staff.

 #Wednesday Jan. 27: Ch. 8: Quotations and Attribution (pgs. 98-121) and Ch. 9: Features (pgs. 122-136). How to correctly punctuate a direct quote and differences between direct quote/paraphrase. What type of story am I writing? What's the difference between a news story and feature story?

 #Friday Jan. 29: FIRST DRAFT-STORIES DUE AT BEGINNING OF CLASS. QUIZ #1 (ALL STAFF): Student Publications Manual and Patriot Press Packet.

 #Monday Feb. 1: Stories returned for revision by section editors. How to write headlines/cutlines. Editors explain revision process. YSI topic announced.

 **##Wednesday Feb. 3: Last day for corrected/revised stories to be accepted. ALL ADS/PHOTOS/GRAPHICS DUE. Nothing accepted for FEBRUARY issue after this point. First-year staff compile "You Said It." February Editorial Board Meeting.

 Friday Feb. 5: Patriot Press packet quiz # 1 returned. LAYOUT FRIDAY: (ALL EDITORS).

 **##Monday Feb. 8: MANDATORY STAFF COPY-EDIT DAY. FEBRUARY ISSUE e-mailed to Gainesville Sun.

 **#Wednesday Feb. 10: MANDATORY MARCH STAFF MEETING. Each staff member must bring TWO story ideas (news + features/sports) to OCTOBER STAFF MEETING. Stories assigned for MARCH issue and e-mailed to staff that night.
